OZONE PLAYER
Insane Logic
The 'ozone player' is Finn Otso Pakarinen who presents a cleverly constructed mix of synthesized sounds and samples influenced by 'The Night's Dawn' trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton.
This unpredictable and inventive CD explores unusual musical avenues. It is demanding on the listener but don't be discouraged- this is not soulless electronic music! The melody on "Shipping", for example, is both beautiful and memorable.
Indeed there is much to admire on 'Insane Logic' - the stunning stereo effects on 'Warezz', the haunting 'musique concréte' of the title track and the programmed percussion and voices on 'Casino Mobile'.
It is interesting to trace on Otso's web site the artist's early musical history - from a taste for Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Uriah Heep through the prog giants then Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream to XTC etc - all good character builders for sure!
He is now described as an 'electro composer' and this genesis has taken some time- 7 years to be precise to complete this project.
Was the journey worth it? Well, Otso's ideas are great but are perhaps not fully realised- yet. (What, another 7 years?!-ed.)
I look forward to hearing more of Otso's works and hope this release is not consigned to the archives of soundtrack history as it deserves a much better fate. Check it out!
