I have been doing animated computer graphics for a living since about 1986.
The work includes various types of image creation and manipulation:
1. Generating motion graphics from 2D images

(sometimes provided by clients, but usually created by me using a graphics program and/or taking pictures with a digital still camera).

This picture is from a title sequence for a tv show.I took four pictures of women's faces from a picture library, coloured and distorted them and made them change into each other. Then I added text, particle rain, gradients and glows.

2. Creating 3D animations

This picture is from a tv commercial where the"camera" follows a raindrop as it falls on a roof and goes down the drain.

In later steps a compositing program is usually needed for combining different passes, making blurs, glows etc and if needed, combining 3D animation with video footage.

3. Manipulating existing video material

For this tv commercial a cow was brought into a studio and made to do several things like walking into picture, looking down, then up etc. I removed all the people who were needed to handle the cow, then speeded up the movement somewhere and slowed down elsewhare (sometimes by morphing to avoid dissolves). I also had to remove the straps from the cow's head.

The penguin was taken from the National Geography film library, cut out, speeded.

slowed, flipped, time-reversed, warped and colour corrected, then composited together with the cow. Also a shadow had to be added.

This frame from a tv commercial is a combination of 2. and 3. above.

The two people and the props that they are actually touching are taken from a green-screen studio footage.

I built the apartment around them, like walls, posters, a window, doors etc. in a 3D program and matched the camera movement with the video. Then I composited the 3D animation with the colour corrected live footage, speeded up parts (sometimes 8 to 10 * normal speed) and combined with other video and 3D parts.
