Frozen Paint on Boiling Canvas

Latest release from Finnish musician Otso Pakarinen (Ozone Player) and from the start this disc is more accessible than his previous offerings and it's good to see that he hasn't followed the trend by going down the path of regenerated berlin school sounds which so dominates the scene these days..

Throughout the album we are treated to all manner of electronic sounds, very different and original in their concept but again very listen-able. Otso has created an intriguing set of musical stories, brimming with melody and exotic rhythms, and with Tim Walters, guest musician, has added some interesting percussive textures from the likes of the hammer dulcimer.
The ten tracks here move in and out of places between reality and imagination with ease and maximum impact with both darker and lighter sides. The range of tonal colours creates a repertoire of music with insistent rhythms, challenging harmonics and melodic diversity, and as the title shows, Otso has a vivid and comical side with a free spirit to unleash quite contagious sounds. It may not be everybody's cup of tea, but If you beg for something different in EM then you will not be disappointed.
